Our pearls

All pearls found on this site are freshwater cultured pearls. Individually selected by hand by our team of expert, we are purchasing these pearls directly from the farms cultivating them.
Do not be fooled by Companies claiming to own pearl farms in China. We have been in business for more than 15 years and have yet to meet one.
Freshwater pearls are typically grown in mussels in lakes or rivers. It takes an average of 6 years for a mussel to make a pearl having a chance of being selected by New Legend Pearls. Actually, we are so selective in our sorting process that only the top 3 to 4% of production is being sold by New Legend Pearls.
At this point, the is no international standard on how to classify pearls. The good news is that the GIA is currently developing one, which will help leveling the field when it comes to assess pearl quality and therefore value.
As pearls are a natural product, no two pearls are alike. Below are some commonly recognized characteristic to categorize pearls.

Size:
The size of the pearl is expressed in millimeters. Usually a larger size will carry a higher price as the pearl will need to be cultured for a longer time. Our 7.5mm to 8mm pearls take an average of 6 years to be produced.

Shape:
Pearls come in shapes from baroque (assymetrical or irregular) to round. Although assymetrical pearls can be very esthetically pleasing, New Legend Pearls specializes in round pearls. The rounded the pearl is, the higher the value.

Color:
Color is essentially a question of taste and individual preference. Pearls come in a variety of colors. Most pearls on this site are white, as we feel they are more distinctive and classical than other colors.

Surface:
This is an indication of how smooth the surface of the pearl is. Some pearls can be dented, have some abrasion, or be scratched. The smoother the surface is, the more expensive the pearl will be.

Luster:
A high luster is synonymous of high reflection on the pearls. Pearls who have less shine will appear dull and are in lesser demand than the high luster pearls sold by New Legend Pearls.

Matching:
For a necklace, it is important that all pearls look similar. Uniformity of the pearls will create a good matching quality. For earings, this is an absolute must as the pair has to be a perfect match.
